The most important consideration for the retreat is safety

87%

of people tell us that safety is the most important factor before sitting with the medicine.

I want to feel safe.

A retreat center and team that you feel safe with is so important for you to be able to fully surrender with Ayahuasca.

Why this safety checklist

Look past the marketing copy to the substance of a retreat center.

Not all retreat centers are equal. The right retreat will welcome your questions and give detailed, honest answers. If not, trust your instincts and look elsewhere. Your healing journey deserves a container of genuine safety and skilled support.

  1. 01Ask every center the same questions.
  2. 02Listen for detail and honesty.
  3. 03Trust your instincts if the answers feel vague.

Physical safety & medical protocols

Medical screening at an ayahuasca retreat: a medic checks a guest's blood pressure at Harmonica Retreat
Screening should cover
  • Antidepressants and stimulants
  • Heart conditions
  • History of psychosis or bipolar
  • Any prescription you may need to pause

Never stop a prescription on your own. A serious center will tell you to speak with the doctor who prescribed it.

  1. Click meMedical screening
    Listen for
    • A medical questionnaire, reviewed by a doctor who advises you what to do going forward
    • The screening covers all important contraindications (listed below)
  2. Emergency protocols
    Listen for
    • A named plan and route to the nearest hospital
    • How far away their nearest hospital is
  3. Medical complications
    Listen for
    • A specific, honest example, not a hypothetical
    • How the team responded in the moment
    • What they changed afterward
Red flagWe've never had any difficulties.

Be cautious. It suggests either limited experience or a lack of transparency.

2

Facilitation & group dynamics

Your primary support system. Facilitators guide your experience before and after ceremonies. They typically combine Western backgrounds with extensive ayahuasca experience.
