How to Cleanse Your Chakras at Home in 20 Minutes

Chakra cleansing is a set of breath, attention and body practices you run on yourself, working from the base of the spine up to the top of the head. We run ayahuasca ceremonies near Medellín, and we hold sound, breath and meditation sessions alongside them. A full pass takes about twenty minutes, and how to cleanse your chakras comes down to where you put your attention and how you breathe once it is there.

The energy field this practice is built on has never been detected. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health states that no scientific evidence supports its existence. The seven points do line up with where people feel things, though: a tight throat, a heavy chest, a cold gut. That map is worth having. The practice below is built on it rather than on the energy story.

If the heaviness you want to clear has been sitting there for years, twenty minutes on the floor may not be the right first move. We do a free call with anyone who wants one before they book:

What Chakra Cleansing Means

Chakra cleansing means moving your attention and your breath through seven points along the spine and head. You stay at each one long enough that whatever sits there gets felt instead of stepped around. That is the whole mechanism. Nothing leaves your body and nothing is added to it.

In the system’s own language a chakra is a wheel, and a blocked chakra is a wheel that has stopped turning. Take the language away and you get something plainer. There is a place in your body you have stopped visiting, because visiting it costs you something.

So the tightness in your throat can be a chakra. It can also be that you have not said one true sentence to your family in years. It can also be that you sleep badly and your neck is stiff from a desk. The practice does not ask you to pick between those. It asks you to go and look. Buying a crystal is how people postpone that.

Two types of people search for this. One has been carrying something heavy for a long time and wants a way in that does not need a therapist’s waiting list. The other is collecting practices, and the collecting is the avoidance. The same twenty minutes does very different work for those two.

Where the Seven Chakras Came From

The seven-chakra system reached English readers through a 1919 translation, and it picked up its rainbow colours in 1977. Chakras appear across tantric Hindu and Buddhist texts written over many centuries, and those texts do not agree with each other. Different lineages count four centres, five, six, nine or more, and place them differently.

The version almost everyone now means comes from one sixteenth-century Sanskrit text, the Ṣaṭ-cakra-nirūpaṇa by Pūrṇānanda. John Woodroffe translated it under the pen name Arthur Avalon. He published it in 1919 as The Serpent Power, which the Internet Archive carries in full. Charles Leadbeater then rewrote the material for a theosophical audience in The Chakras in 1927.

The colours came later still. Kurt Leland traced that history for the Theosophical Society in America. He credits Ken Dychtwald with joining the colour healers’ rainbow list to the chakra qualities the human potential movement was using, in the summer of 1977. The red root and violet crown scheme is less than fifty years old.

None of that makes the system worthless. It makes the version you have met about as old as disco, which is worth knowing before somebody sells you a six-week certification in reading it.

Is Chakra Healing Real?

There is no scientific evidence that chakras exist as physical structures, and none that clearing one treats a disease. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says the same about Reiki, the nearest energy practice with a published federal review. The field they describe has never been detected, and the studies that do exist are mostly of poor quality with inconsistent results.

The part with data behind it is narrower and more interesting. In a 2014 study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Lauri Nummenmaa and colleagues asked 701 people to colour in a body outline. They marked where sensation rose or fell for each emotion they were given. Distinct emotions produced distinct maps, and the maps held across West European and East Asian participants. Anger and fear concentrated in the head and upper torso. Happiness and love spread almost everywhere.

So people do locate feelings in particular parts of the body, reliably enough to measure. That is a finding about reported sensation. It is not a finding about wheels of energy, and stretching it into one would be the same move we are asking you not to make.

That also gives a straight answer on whether chakra cleansing works. It works the way twenty minutes of slow breathing and directed attention works, and that is a real effect with real limits. It is less about clearing an invisible blockage. It is more about spending time somewhere in yourself you have been avoiding. We are not going to tell you it does more than that while nobody has shown it does.

How to Tell If a Chakra Is Blocked

There is no test for a blocked chakra, and nobody can diagnose you with one, us included. People who use this vocabulary describe a fairly consistent set of things. Read the list below as seven places to go and check.

  • Root, base of the pelvis. People describe money fear, a sense of having no ground under them, restless legs, and never quite feeling at home anywhere.
  • Sacral, low belly. Flat desire, numbness after a breakup, guilt attached to pleasure, creative work that will not start.
  • Solar plexus, above the navel. A gut that knots before hard conversations, trouble saying no, and either shrinking from conflict or running hot into it.
  • Heart, centre of the chest. Pressure behind the sternum, holding people at arm’s length, grief that never got a place to land.
  • Throat. Tightness when you go to speak, swallowing what you meant to say, talking constantly and saying nothing true.
  • Third eye, between the brows. Overthinking that will not stop, headaches behind the eyes, mistrusting your own read on a situation.
  • Crown, top of the head. Flatness, no sense of meaning, weeks that go past on autopilot.

Every item on that list is also a symptom of something a doctor should look at. Long throat tightness, gut pain, chest pressure and months of exhaustion are medical questions before they are spiritual ones. Get them checked. Then come back to the floor. The list works best as a way of noticing which part of you goes quiet the moment you turn attention onto it.

How to Cleanse Your Chakras Step by Step

A full pass runs about twenty minutes: three minutes settling the breath, roughly two minutes at each of the seven points, then a few minutes doing nothing. You need a floor and a room where nobody needs you. Work through it in this order.

  1. Set up. Lie on your back, or sit with the spine supported. Put the phone in another room, so the practice is not competing with a notification for the same twenty minutes.
  2. Settle the breath. Three minutes of exhales roughly twice as long as the inhales. This drops your arousal enough that you can feel small things, which is the only requirement for the rest of it.
  3. Start at the base. Put your attention on the floor of the pelvis. You are not visualising a red wheel. You are asking what is there, what temperature it is, and what changes when the breath reaches it.
  4. Move up one point at a time. Roughly two minutes each, in the order of the list above. Move on even when nothing happens, because waiting for a result turns a practice into a test you can fail.
  5. Stay where it sticks. One point out of seven usually feels different: blank, sore, or oddly boring. The boring one repays the extra time. Give it five minutes instead of two and let it be uncomfortable.
  6. Come down and stop. Two minutes flat on the floor with no technique at all. Then get up slowly and write one sentence about what you noticed, so you have something to compare against next week.

That is the practice. Daily for two weeks tells you far more than one ambitious session a month. Comparing one day against the next is how anything becomes visible.

One warning about how it goes wrong. Say you get up from the floor and the first thing you want is to tell somebody your crown opened. That is spiritual ego doing its work, and the practice has become a costume. Nobody at the office needs to hear about your third eye. The homework is whether you said the difficult sentence to the person you have been avoiding, and no amount of floor time counts in its place.

The Breath That Does Most of the Work

The slow-exhale breathing in step two has better evidence behind it than the chakra map does. Melis Balban and colleagues put 108 people through five minutes a day of one of three breathing exercises or mindfulness meditation, for 28 days. Their randomised trial in Cell Reports Medicine came out in 2023. The exhale-focused exercise, cyclic sighing, improved mood more than the meditation did and lowered resting breathing rate.

Cyclic sighing is simple enough that you can do it badly and still get something. Inhale through the nose, take a second short sip of air on top of it, then let a long slow exhale out through the mouth. Repeat that for five minutes and stop.

Hold the limits in view. That trial ran for a month with 108 people, it found no change in heart rate variability, and it was not testing chakras at all. It supports the breathing. That is why the breathing comes at the start of the sequence instead of being treated as a warm-up. Our breathwork sessions in Medellín are holotropic breathwork, which uses fast breathing rather than the long exhales above. That is a different practice and not the one this trial tested.

How Long Chakra Cleansing Takes

One pass takes twenty minutes. The change people are asking about when they ask this question takes weeks or months, and sometimes it does not arrive at all. Anyone promising you a cleared system in three sessions is selling a schedule that nothing in this practice can keep.

A workable expectation is something noticeable inside two weeks of daily practice, usually small. You catch your jaw clenching before a call. You notice the chest goes tight around one particular person. Those are the comprehensions that make a difference, and they are quieter than the marketing on this topic.

When months go by and nothing shifts, it can be that the timing is wrong and something else in your life needs to move first. It can also be that you do twenty quiet minutes and then spend the other twenty-three hours in the same coping mechanisms. That undoes the twenty minutes before the day is out. It can also be that the thing you are circling is bigger than a floor practice and wants a person in the room with you.

Give yourself a level of grace about that. Then do not use the grace as a reason to skip the homework, because nothing changes while you keep on doing what you have been doing.

When Cleansing Your Chakras Is the Wrong Tool

This practice is a poor fit for several people, and we would rather say so than take a booking. Skip it, or work with a professional instead, if any of the following describes you.

  • You are in an acute mental health crisis, or living with psychosis, mania or an untreated bipolar diagnosis. Long silent attention practice can destabilise you, so a doctor comes first.
  • Going quiet floods you with trauma material. Some people find that closing their eyes and turning inward opens something they cannot then close. Do this work with a trauma-trained therapist rather than alone on a floor.
  • You have a physical symptom you have not had checked. Chest pressure and gut pain get a doctor before they get a chakra.
  • You are on your ninth modality this year. Another practice is not the missing piece, and you already know what is.

One controlled trial would change our answer: one showing that attending to a specific body region does something a general relaxation practice of the same length does not. If that lands, our answer here changes. Until it does, we credit the breath and the attention, and we treat the seven wheels as a map rather than as anatomy.

Doing This With Someone Else

Working with another person changes two things. Somebody else keeps the time, and somebody else notices what you talk around. That is most of the value, and it is worth paying for once you have tried the twenty minutes alone and kept sliding off it.

For a facilitated version rather than a self-guided one, our chakra healing sessions in Medellín set out what a session involves and who it suits. Some people get further with sound than with silence, and our sound healing circles put the same attention work under instruments instead of instructions. Reiki in Medellín is the hands-on version of the same family of practice, with the same evidence caveat attached. If what you want is the plain skill of holding attention with no system on top of it, start with a meditation class.

Chakra work comes up most often in the weeks after a ceremony, when the body still feels heavy. That is integration work, and a daily twenty minutes sits well inside it, because it gives the comprehensions somewhere quiet to land.

Try the twenty minutes on your own first. If you then want a second opinion on how to cleanse your chakras, book a free consultation call and we will go through what you are trying to clear.

FAQs

How do you know if your chakra is blocked?

You cannot know, because there is no test for it and no scan detects a chakra. People use a felt-sense check instead. Move your attention slowly from the base of the pelvis to the top of the head, two minutes at each of the seven points. Notice which one goes blank, sore or oddly boring. That is the point worth spending more time on. Anything physical that has lasted weeks belongs with a doctor first.

What are the symptoms of a blocked chakra?

People describe money fear and no ground under them at the root, numb desire at the sacral, and a knotted gut at the solar plexus. Higher up it is chest heaviness at the heart, tightness when you speak at the throat, and overthinking that will not stop at the third eye. At the crown the description is flatness or lost meaning. These are descriptions people give. None of them is a diagnosis, and every one is also a symptom of something medical, so get persistent ones checked.

How to unblock all 7 chakras?

Work up the line in one sitting of about twenty minutes. Settle the breath for three minutes, with exhales twice as long as the inhales. Then give each of the seven points roughly two minutes of plain attention, working from the pelvis upward. Finish lying still for two minutes with no technique. Give five minutes instead of two to whichever point feels different. Doing this daily for two weeks is more useful than one long session a month.

How long does it take to clear your chakras?

One pass takes about twenty minutes. People who practise daily usually notice something small within two weeks, such as catching a jaw clench or a chest tightening around one particular person. The larger change people mean by this question takes months, and sometimes it does not come. Anyone promising a cleared system in three paid sessions is selling a schedule the practice cannot keep.

Does chakra cleansing work?

It works the way twenty minutes of slow breathing and directed attention works, which is a real effect with real limits. There is no evidence it clears an energy blockage, because no such field has been detected. The slow-exhale breathing underneath it has the better evidence. A 2023 randomised trial in Cell Reports Medicine found five minutes a day of cyclic sighing improved mood more than mindfulness meditation over 28 days.

Is chakra healing real?

The chakra map is real as a vocabulary and unproven as anatomy. No scientific evidence supports the energy field the practice is built around, and the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says so plainly. Research does support one nearby claim. People locate emotions in consistent parts of the body, and a 2014 study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences mapped that across 701 participants. Use the framework as a map of felt experience and it holds up. Treat it as a treatment for disease and it does not.

Medical note. Nothing on this page is medical advice, and chakra cleansing is not a treatment for any illness. Persistent chest pain, gut pain, throat trouble or exhaustion needs a doctor. If you live with psychosis, mania or an untreated bipolar diagnosis, talk to your clinician before you take up any long silent attention practice.
